Vintage Toby Jug Figural Teapot..Too English!!!

England has it's share of eccentrics...ya think??!  I KNOW they do...I'm related to lots! But it's all in the family.

I just thought I'd show you this funny two sided teapot made by Shorter & Sons, England between 1905-1920. The design is called a Toby, and one train of thought is that Toby jugs developed from a character called Toby Philpots after the character Toby Philpots from a translation of an Italian story/poem in the mid 1700s. The Tobies were very popular in all forms, jugs, mugs, pitchers and bottles during the 1800s. They are also thought to have derived from the Shakespeare character Sir Toby Belch in 12th Night....who knows...but they are fun! Think of Royal Doulton's famous character jugs, called Toby Jugs!

Have a great day and a cuppa with a friend!

  3. This Toby pot is so cute, Ruth. You know, my mother had a mug exactly like this that her sister had given to her when they were girls. My brother owns it now. Thanks for sharing at my HOME.

    Blessings,

  5. Ruth, what a unique and fun teapot. We all have a few interesting characters in our family I think. None of my are from England, but still some are eccentric. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
