Thursday Tea Things And Talk, Geo Jones Shannon, Country Diary For March

Welcome to Thursday Tea Things And Talk! It's nearly St. Patrick's Day, and I had another celtic teacup to share. My main St. Patrick's Day post with some photos from a trip to Cobh & Kinsale is the previous Tuesday Cuppa Tea post, which can be visitied HERE if you would like to.

I love this celtic meets art nouveau design called Shannon by George Jones Crescent China is a favorite of mine who began in England in 1864. The green is so appropriate for St. Patrick's Day, but it also came in a red colorway as well:

I spoke in a different post about the different versions of the same pattern that are produced, and this is a great example of the difference by color. George Jones & Sons England and their other versions, George Jones, Crescent China and Geo Jones Crescent China are a favorite manufacturer. They are probably best known for their stunning majolica ware. The following is a Pinterest photo:

George Jones and the Crescent Pottery operated until 1957 when it closed. Their workmanship was fabulous!   The little bird plate above continued a train of thought raised by the racket of all the birds over the last week who have come in to breed and raise their little ones. We are not the only ones interested. Here is our cat Tinker in the window in the highest window in the sunroom where he is right up in tree level. The trees are just beginning to leaf out here on the Olympic Peninsula...much later than many of you! Our bulbs aren't up yet!

I remembered that a favorite book, Country Diary Of An Edwardian Lady from 1911 in Wiltshire, England by Edith Holden, focuses on birds in her March diary pages.

On the first page of March she has a proverbs and a poem:

"A peck of March dust is worth a king's ransom"

"So many misties in March

So many frosties in May"

"March'll search ye, April try ye,

May'll tell, whether live or die ye"

"March hack ham, comes in like a lion

and out like a lamb"

"March borrowed from Averill

Three days and they were ill

The first it sall br snaw & sleet

The neist it sall be rain & weet

The last it sall be sie a freeze

Sall gar the birds stick to the trees."

 The next pages with Edith's drawings are much more cheerful with birds and their eggs, pussy willows and daffodils.

The book is a treat thoughout the year. As she records the small happenings of her life we see a vanished age that is charming and a bit raw. This is the Downton Abbey time, and she would be the equivalent of minor gentry, like the doctor or even Matthew when he was a solicitor. 

I'll leave you today with some shamrocks or oxalis growing in some moss...we have a LOT of moss around here! But they fit right in to a St. Patrick's Day post. Have a wonderful time....my honey will have a beloved Guiness in honor of the day! Not me...maybe a glass of Bailey's Irish Cream though!
