Teacup Tuesday Another Hand Painted Art Deco Cup And Saucer, Victoria Mag and Lemon Tart

Hello and welcome to Teacup Tuesday with the many wonderful Tea related blogs. I am sharing another hand painted art deco design cup and saucer from the 1930s. I just love them...maybe they aren't too fancy, but they are one of a kind and so indicative of the art deco era. There was a design flow to simplify and individualize design. Artists were appreciated for their individuality, an idea I have always appreciated.  More so when so much we see is mass produced in China nowadays with little concern with individual artistic expression.

Sorry, I'll get off my hobby horse!  :)  My post is late today, because blogger has been acting up and not uploading photos....Grrrr....

The red is a second hand application of red enamel paint over the original hand painted flower design that has been fired. The red enamel is raised and is sometimes called jeweling.  The makes is Phoenix which was made by Thomas Forester and Sons in Staffordshire, England who made a lot of hand painted items in the 1930-1940s. The company closed in 1959.

For more info on the Phoenix teacup at Antiques And Teacups, click on the photo.

This is a recipe for a lemon tart from a great Cottage Journal email I receive because I subscribe to both Victoria Magazine and Tea Time Magazine.

Makes 1 (12-inch) tart

1 3/4 cups vanilla wafer crumbs
1/3 cup butter, melted
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 cup butter
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
6 egg yolks
1 large egg
1 cup heavy whipping cream
Garnish: sliced lemons

1. Preheat oven to 350°.
2. In a medium bowl, combine crumbs, 1/3 cup melted butter, and brown sugar. Press firmly on bottom and up sides of a 12-inch tart pan. Bake for 10 minutes; let cool.
3. In a medium saucepan, melt 1 cup butter over medium heat. Whisk in sugar, lemon juice, egg yolks, and egg. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for 10 minutes or until thickened. Remove from heat, and cool completely.
4. In a medium bowl, beat cream at medium-high speed with a mixer until soft peaks form. Fold whipped cream into cooled lemon mixture. Spoon into prepared tart shell. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Garnish with lemon slices, if desired.
And I LOVED some of the photos in the Cottage Journal email from their publications:

These were from last month's Blue & White issue...which is ALWAYS my favorite color scheme!!!!!

Teacup Thursday Duchess Fruit Cup And Saucer

Hello and welcome to Teacup Thursday with Miss Spenser's blog.

Today in Washington state it's still summer...which means we are basking in actually hitting 80 degrees or close to it for the last few days. My prayers are with those who have been dealing with droughts and now the threat of a hurricane.

Because our farmer's market is finally beginning to get fruit in, I chose this 1950s Duchess, England bone china cup and saucer. I love the vibrant colors...you can almost taste the fruit! For more info on the Fruit teacup at Antiques And Teacups, click on the photos.

Our market is seeing some nectarines, peaches and plums with raspberries and blackberries. Late summer is such a time of abundance and going to our local market is a delight for the eyes, ears and nose. We love going each week to see what's new, and I plan my meals around what I find at the market. Last night we had pizzas I made with market basil pesto I made with onions, fresh tomatoes and even local mushrooms!  And I just realized I suppose I should have taken a photo...never thought of it! We just ate it!!!

Have a lovely day visiting the other blog participants in Teacup Thursday and head to a local farmer's market this weekend for some real taste!

Teacup Tuesday, My Grandmother Emma Bridgewater & Her Teacups

Hello! It's time for Teacup Tuesday in all it's variations as I join the ladies who are listed below and many others!

This is my grandmother, Emma Bridgewater, who began and fostered my love of antiques and Victoriana. Yep...her name really was Emma Bridgewater and she was born in Leicester, England in 1881. She was born Emma Rice (unlike the potter Emma Bridgewater who was born Bridgewater and married a Rice!) and remembers going in a carriage in 1897 when she was 16 to watch the village roasting oxen on the green to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. She couldn't attend because she was just recovering from scarlet fever.

The photo above is Emma participating in a play at age 18 as part of a dramatic society she belonged to.  I inherited her curly hair...and a few health problems as well, by that's by the bay. ANYWAY, it was growing up listening to her memories of Victorian England that formed my love of the period. Then, when I was 16 she gave me her teapot and teacups. I have an older sister who was offered them first, but she was into Danish modern so I got all the family Victoriana. Yippee!!!

This is one of the teacups I received from my grandmother. The design is sn ethereal watercolor of swans and was made in Germany in the 1880s. It has a crack and a chip, but I treasure it!

This is another of my grandmother's teacups that I treasure. This is a Haviland, Limoges from the 1880s that is just beautiful.

In the top photo of the hair locket I inherited from my grandmother as well that is hand made and hand engraved and originally had a lock of hair in the back covered with an eisenglass window. After marrying George Bridgewater, another Englishman from Leicester, England, Emma became a nurse and decided that the hair was unsanitary and removed it. It is one of my favorite momentoes of  her and I wear it often.

So there are my teacups. I'm now going to visit all the other teacups. One of my favorite days! I am joining the ladies below, and others. I have to figure out how to do the linky!!!!

Teacup Thursday Art Deco Teacup And Shelley Acacia Plate

Hi and welcome to Teacup Thursday with Miss Spenser's Tea Blog.

I am sharing today another teacup I found on my travels to Poulsbo 2 weeks ago. If you followed my blog, you know I have a weakness for the vintage hand colored on transfer art deco design teacups that were popular with English makers in the time between the 2 world wars. The art deco design ethic was the latest thing is modernity and was a total change from the Victorian and Edwardian designs. Now, don't get me wrong, I love cups and saucers from those eras as well, but I think hand colored art deco cups and saucers are unappreciated.

Sampson Smith manufactured the Old Royal line in the 1930s. They had been around since the 1840s in Staffordshire and made a lot more earthenwares than fine china. They are especially know as the manufacturers of so called "Pot Dogs" for pottery dogs, mantel dogs or Staffordshire dogs that were wildly popular in the 19th century. Their last pottery closed in 1963, the era that put many of the long running potteries out of business, iincluding my favorite and specialty, Shelley China.

photos from stock items at Antiques And Teacups

This plate was made by Shelley China, England at the same time as the cup and saucer above and has the same design ethos. The pattern is call Acacia and it was made in several colorways. Now all we need is Red Velvet cupcakes, and scones with lemon curd....Mmmmmm!

Enjoy visiting the other participants of Teacup Thursday. I always look forward to it.

Teacup, Teapot and Tea Time Tuesday Birthday tea at Port Gamble Tea Room

Hi and welcome to the Tuesday Tea extravanaza of blogs saluting all things tea. I love it!  I am sharing today my birthday celebration tea last week at The Tea Room At Port Gamble, Washington, a town on the Historic Register founded on timber in 1853 and still well preserved. These photos were taken in the morning, a typical Washington coastal morning with marine layer intact, 65 degrees, which burned off later in the day.

The next photo is of the town's post office, which everyone is hoping will not be closed, and then a local bookstore, Dauntless books which has an official greeter outside.

This is the Tea Room At Port Gamble which added an evening bistro recently.

We ordered the Chocolate Tea:
CHOCOLATE HIGH TEA” $22.95 per person
Reservations Requested
(Not served after 3:30 pm)
Variety of Tea Sandwiches:
     Smoked Salmon with Caper Spread
     English Cucumber with Mint Butter
     Cotswold Cheese with Roma Tomatoes
Scone
of your choice with Devonshire Cream, Strawberry Jam &/or Lemon Curd
Orange Blossom Tea Cookie and a Truffle of your choice  Fresh Fruit Chocolate Fondue
Your Choice of Tea or French Press Coffee.

As it was my birthday...and I LOVE chocolate!

See...I DID get a teacup and teapot in this post! Although not mine....The teapot was filled with a nicely brewed and decanted Margaret's Hope Darjeeling.

We had not had tea here for almost 2 years and had forgotten just how HUGE the scones were! We ended up splitting a lemon scone and taking the cranberry pecan home which we had split and toasted with butter and jam for tea the next day.

Part of the chocolate tea was our choice of  a truffle from their selection.

We actually took half the sandwiches home and did not even have the chocolate fruit fondue which was to be our dessert as part of the tea. We were just too full! But the owner presented us with a gift certificate for the fondue and a pot of tea since we hadn't had it...which was a nice touch and very much appreciated!

It was a lovely tea on a lovely setting with great staff...the owner even sang to us...the old music hall love ballad The ABCs Of Love which starts out...
A...you're adorable,
B...you're so beautiful,
etc.
A nice birthday tea!  I am joining the following tea blogs today and others. Please visit and enjoy a cuppa with each one!
Cheers!

Pink Saturday, Coalport Teacup, Pink Miracle Makeover Day

Today with my usual Pink Saturday post with How Sweet The Sound, I will be visiting each of the blogs participating in the Miracle Makeover today. To read all about the blessings planned for cancer sufferer Charlie, watch the video and visit the sites listed at How Sweet The Sound.

Last week we had a day out at Poulsbo, WA which I shared about last Saturday for my Pink Saturday Post

Pink Saturday, Pink Carousel Horse Mug, Lunch at Poulsbo, WA

But I didn't share my other blessing, because I was shaving it for today because it is pink!  I am a teacup lover, and when stopped to browse at the Poulsbo Antique Mall and I fell in love!!

I spotted this pink Coalport, England cup and saucer and my first thought was...oh goodie! For Pink Saturday! The pattern is called either Maple Time or Maple and it was made in several colorways. But I think it is gorgeous! My current favorite! The teacup was made between 1945-1960 and I absolutely love it...and it's pink!!!!

So, now I am going to go visit all the blogs participating with Charlie's Miracle Makeover and the other Pink Saturday blogs. Come with me and join in!

Teacup Thursday, Morning Glory by Royal Albert, antique dress clip, Tea quote, Operation Cup Of Tea UK

Welcome to another Teacup Thursday with Miss Spenser's Blog.

We have finally had summer these past 2 weeks which has been long awaited here in the northwest.  And one of the things that have loved it are the morning glories around here. So the teacup I chose this week by by Royal Albert, England in the Morning Glory pattern in bone china made in the 1960s in England. I love blue and think that this is such a pretty cup and saucer!

Morning glories run rampant up here...and love to twine around the spent iris stalks...at least in my garden. I let them be...I think they are so pretty.

I tried to find something else with morning glories and found this antique English repousse gold plated metal dress or fur clip in an art nouveau design dating to around 1900. These are still used as neckline, collar or lapel clips and are such neat antique accents.

For more info on the Morning Glory teacup or dress clip at Antiques And Teacups just click on the photos.

Victoria Magazine has always been a favorite of mine, and through it;s pages I grew to look forward to writings by Catherine Calvert who married a Scotsman and emigrated to the UK and reported often in the pages of Victoria. She also wrote several books, and this is a quote from her "Having Tea" that I find so meaningful:

The real wealth of the tea table
Lies in it's ability to enrich the everyday,
Gild the moment with importance,
And celebrate the loosening
of the day's demands.

Today's treat with our afternoon tea are puff pastry pinwheel blossoms from the Bell Street Bakery in Sequim. Mine had an almond paste center, by husband's had a cream cheese and fresh strawberry center. They were lovely! And a nice celebration of my birthday which is today.

We are really celebrating tomorrow at the Tea Room at Port Gamble tomorrow where we will be having a Chocolate tea. We called for a reservation for today 2 weeks ago only to find the entire afternoon had been reserved by a tea group from Seattle. So...I get to prolong the celebration! I will be posting photos of our tea soon.

Enjoy visiting the other participants of Teacup Thursday!

I wanted to add a comment about this facebook page & website I found. Brits dealing with the riots...some close to our family in Walsall, West Midlands but everyone is okay at the moment, who have a charity to help victims and a great logo for their Operation Cup Of Tea:
